Rot-Weiss Essen is a football club from Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, founded in 1907. The club is one of the most traditional clubs in German football and played in the Oberliga, the highest league in the west, in the 1950s. Rot-Weiss Essen won the German championship in 1955 and won the DFB Cup in 1994. After a long period in the lower leagues, the club is currently fighting in the Regionalliga for promotion to the 3rd division. The club plays its home games in the stadium on Hafenstrasse and enjoys a loyal fan base.
