Alianza Lima is one of Peru's most traditional and successful football clubs. Founded in Lima in 1901, the club is one of the oldest in South America. Alianza has won numerous national championships and has an intense rivalry with Universitario de Deportes, known as the "Clásico del Fútbol Peruano". The club is known for its attacking style of play and close ties to the working class. In 1987, one of the greatest tragedies in Peruvian football occurred when almost the entire team was killed in a plane crash. Despite ups and downs, Alianza Lima remains a central force in Peruvian football.
